As A Tenant…

The life of a tenant compared to that of a home owner is very different. There are aspects in which you’ll need to worry about, that a home owner wouldn’t. Renting property, whether it be an apartment or a house from a landlord comes with it’s own unique responsibilities and concerns. For example, if you owned the property in which you were living, you wouldn’t have to worry about multiple tenants and insurance policies. A home owner can purchase home and contents insurance for themselves, and cover everything they want to in a policy without any trouble. Insurance for tenants is a little more complicated. Because the property itself is owned by the landlord, they will have their own insurance policy to cover any damages that may occur. However, this will never include what is inside the home, and what belongs to you. This is why it is so important to find a tailored policy just for you and your possessions.

Sometimes tenants will rent a residence that is furnished, or already contains certain items such as a bed or a refrigerator. These items belong to the landlord, and would need to be covered by the landlord’s contents insurance in the event of damage or loss. The rest of your possessions, however, will not be covered by that policy. It is up to you to protect your own investment, and discover what policy and coverage you need for your own belongings. There are also cases in which the landlord will insist that your own contents insurance policy cover the furniture inside the rented property. This means you are financially responsible for the items, even though they belong to the landlord. These are important details to consider because it could cost you a considerable amount of money in the long run, if you are caught off guard by insurance coverage.

As a renter, or a tenant, you won’t have to worry about home insurance. A perk of not owning the property or the building in which you’re living is that you are not financially responsible for it. However, you are responsible for your own possessions and belongings. If you want to be sure the contents of your home are covered, you will need to consult your landlord, and most likely, purchase an insurance policy. Insurance is an essential part of protecting your investments, especially when it comes to your home and everything in it.
